Will Smith Awards – Willard Carroll Smith II, born on September 25, 1968, is an American actor and rapper who gained fame as the Fresh Prince.
He is a recipient of numerous prestigious awards, including an Academy Award, a BAFTA Award, and four Grammy Awards. As of 2023, his films have grossed over $9.3 billion worldwide, establishing him as one of Hollywood’s most successful and dependable stars.
Will Smith initially rose to prominence by starring as a fictionalized version of himself in the NBC sitcom The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air (1990-1996).
He first gained recognition as part of a hip hop duo alongside DJ Jazzy Jeff, releasing five studio albums and several chart-topping singles from 1984 to 1994. Smith’s solo albums, such as Big Willie Style (1997), Willennium (1999), Born to Reign (2002), and Lost and Found (2005), further solidified his musical career and included hit songs like “Gettin’ Jiggy wit It” and “Wild Wild West.” He has been honored with four Grammy Awards for his rap performances.
Will Smith’s success extended to the silver screen, where he became a leading man in various genres. He starred in action films like the Bad Boys series (1995, 2003, 2020), sci-fi comedies Men in Black (1997), Men in Black II (2002), and Men in Black 3 (2012).
Notable performances in thrillers such as Independence Day (1996) and Enemy of the State (1998) garnered him critical acclaim and Academy Award nominations for his portrayals of Muhammad Ali in Ali (2001) and Chris Gardner in The Pursuit of Happyness (2006).
He went on to star in a string of commercially successful movies, including I, Robot (2004), Shark Tale (2004), Hitch (2005), I Am Legend (2007), Hancock (2008), Seven Pounds (2008), Suicide Squad (2016), and Aladdin (2019).
In 2021, Will Smith won the Academy Award, BAFTA Award, Golden Globe Award, and Screen Actors Guild Award for Best Actor for his portrayal of Richard Williams in the biographical sports drama King Richard.
However, his behavior at the 2022 Academy Awards ceremony, where he confronted Chris Rock over an unscripted joke about his wife, Jada Pinkett Smith, resulted in public backlash. Will Smith subsequently resigned from the Academy and received a ten-year ban from attending all Academy functions, including the Oscars.
Smith grew up in the Wynnefield neighborhood of West Philadelphia and was raised in a Baptist family. He has an older sister named Pamela and younger twin siblings, Harry and Ellen. Smith attended Our Lady of Lourdes, a private Catholic elementary school, and later Overbrook High School. His parents separated when he was 13 and divorced around the year 2000.
At the age of 12, Smith began his journey in rapping. However, when his grandmother discovered his lyrics, which contained profanity, she left him a note expressing that truly intelligent individuals do not need to use such words to express themselves. This message had a profound impact on Smith, influencing his decision to avoid using profanity in his music.
