Who is Cole Anthony?

Cole Hinton Anthony was born on May 15, 2000 in Portland, Oregon in the United States. He is the son of former professional basketball player Greg Anthony and Crystal McCrary. He is also the stepson of American businessman and political candidate Raymond McGuire.

At the time of Anthony’s birth, his father Greg was playing for the Portland Trail Blazers. His umbilical cord was wrapped around his neck, affecting his heart rate at the time but not leading to further complications.

During his early years, his family moved to Manhattan, where he grew up in a penthouse. Being birthed into a wealthy family, Anthony was raised with hard-working values. Having later affirmed that, “They don’t hand anything to me in life. What they do hand to me is knowledge.”

Prior to becoming a basketball player, Anthony played baseball, a sport his father initially thought he would pursue. During his childhood, he worked with private basketball trainers and played pick-up games at local parks, seeking out elder opponents.

At age 11, Anthony appeared in “Little Ballers,” a 2013 Nickelodeon documentary film which was directed by his mother Crystal McCrary. The film featured Anthony’s New York-based AAU team, New Heights.

Anthony attended Archbishop Molloy High School in Briarwood, New York, where he played basketball in his first three years. He was the first freshman to immediately start at point guard for Molloy.

During his high school playing days, Anthony averaged 16.9 points and 6.7 rebounds per game. His performances earned him All-Catholic High School Athletic Association (CHSAA) Class AA second team recognition.

After high school, Anthony attended the University of Carolina, where he continued playing basketball. He was considered one of the top recruits in the 2019 class after his performances in his sophomore season in high school.

Anthony was drafted in 2020, in the 1st round, 15th overall pick by the Orlando Magic. He hit the ground running, putting up 13 points alongside a game-winning, buzzer-beating three-pointer in a 97–96 win against the Minnesota Timberwolves.
