They also are told “stories addressing important issues of our time.” Together together with the director Remy Tissier, she’s developed more than 10 original full-length plays. They explore issues related to sexual assault, domestic violence as well as cross-generational diversity, voting registration and The Civil Rights Movement, identity and the global HIV/AIDS crisis. The play examines American culture through the blues as well as the spiritual roots that live in the Mississippi River but originated in West Africa. Pettitt has presented her work at the Saint-Laurent-du-Maroni Les Rencontres du Bout des Mondes International Festival in 2011 (French Guiana). Alongside the Fulbright fellowship, she’s been awarded numerous award and grants. This includes grant from National Endowment for the Arts and the New York Foundation for the Arts. Pearls of Wisdom is a storytelling group of members of the Elders Share the Arts in N.Y. City. Pettitt is the group’s founding artistic director. Along together with Pearls of Wisdom Pearls of Wisdom, she was recognized in 2007 in the the City Lore’s People’s Hall of Fame.
In 1974, following the completion of an undergraduate degree in English from Antioch College, she moved to London for the Thomas J. Watson Fellowship. Pettitt is now within New York City. She was married from 1982 to director, writer as well as painter Remy Tissier.
