He had kept his cancer diagnosis private since January 2019. He and his wife, Anel, had returned to South Africa from Los Angeles, where they had been living and working in Hollywood for five years.

Alexander had gained fame for his roles in various productions, including Dr Rico Maartens in the Afrikaans soap Binnelanders and Tristan in M-Net’s The Wild.

He had worked in South Africa, the United Kingdom, and the United States over the past 15 years, and had also co-presented the M-Net reality competition show Project Fame in 2004. Alexander had appeared in other South African productions such as Generations, Home Affairs, and various short films.

James Alexander also appeared in American series such as Black Sails, Madiba, Roots, and The Book of Negroes. In M-Net’s Trackers, Alexander played the role of Lemmer. Despite his cancer diagnosis, Alexander continued to work and keep his personal life private until his passing on April 24, 2023.
