Caroline Ellison Parents: Meet Gleen and Sara – Caroline Ellison was raised in a suburb of Boston. She attended Newton North High School and competed for the United States in the 2011 International Linguistics Olympiad.

She was awarded a National Merit Scholarship in 2012. In 2016, Ellison graduated with a mathematics bachelor’s degree from Stanford University.

While attending Stanford, she placed in the top 500 students in the Putnam Competitions in 2013, 2014, and 2015.

After graduating, Ellison began working for Jane Street, a quantitative trading company, where he first met Sam Bankman-Fried.

In March 2018, Ellison started working for Alameda Research, and in October 2021, she and Sam Trabucco were given the title of co-CEO. She became the sole CEO of Alameda Research in August 2022 following Trabucco’s resignation.

On November 6, 2022, after CoinDesk raised concerns about Alameda Research’s balance sheet and its relationship with FTX, Ellison stated that the balance sheet information released only included a portion of Alameda’s assets, and that the firm had more than $10 billion in additional assets.

According to anonymous sources cited by the Wall Street Journal and The New York Times, Ellison was in a video meeting with employees on November 9, 2022, where she admitted that FTX had used customer money to help Alameda meet its liabilities and that she, Bankman-Fried, and two other FTX executives, Nishad Singh and Gary Wang, were all aware of the situation.

John J. Ray III fired Ellison after FTX, Alameda Research, and more than 100 related companies filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy.

Ellison hired Stephanie Avakian of the white shoe law firm WilmerHale as her lead attorney in early December 2022.

In a plea bargain on December 18, Ellison pleaded guilty in the Southern District of New York to conspiracy to commit wire fraud on FTX customers, conspiracy to commit wire fraud on Alameda Research lenders, conspiracy to commit commodities fraud, conspiracy to commit securities fraud, and conspiracy to commit money laundering. She is an obedient witness.
